SALUDA – A tanker overturned along I-26 early Saturday morning spilling milk into Cove Creek below.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said the single vehicle wreck happened along I-26 East near Holbert Cove just before 7 a.m. Saturday, July 1.
The N.C. Division of Water Resources for the Asheville Region responded and said there was approximately 6,000 gallons of raw milk spilled along I-26, which flowed from storm drains into Cove Creek. Cove Creek flows into the Green River.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said the cause of the wreck was due to unsafe speed for road conditions.
The eastbound lane of I-26 was backed up much of the day following the spill.
The creek was discolored but there was no risk to humans. Although there was a slight risk to fish, no fish were found while the N.C. Division of Water Resources was on scene.
This was the second accident along I-26 eastbound in just a few days. On Thursday, June 29, a Two Men and a Truck vehicle overturned near Saluda and caused traffic delays.
