Region 8’s entry in the Powerade State Games of North Carolina suffered a pair of close losses Tuesday in the opening day of bracket play in Greensboro.
Region 8 – featuring four Polk County players and coaches Jamie Thompson and Jamie Hrobak – suffered a 6-5 loss to Region 6 and a 7-6 loss to Region 7.
Region 8 will conclude bracket play on Wednesday morning against Region 7 (1-1). A win there and a Region 5 win over Region 6 would create a three-way tie for second in the West bracket, and Region 8 could possibly still play for a bronze medal based on run differential.
Polk County’s Haley Fowler finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the opener while Wolverine Autumn Owen was 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and RBI in the second game. Maranda Gosnell added a hit in both games.
Madison’s Hannah Jennings finished the day 6-for-9 with two RBI for Region 8.
