Sara D. Chalmers

Sara DeBerry Chalmers, 92, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2017, in White Oak Manor, Tryon, N.C.

Born in Ft. Pierce, Fla., she was the daughter of the late James Robert and Sara Huntley DeBerry. She was the widow of Carl Mannix Chalmers, who passed away in 1997. Sara retired from First Baptist Church of Greenville after 28 years as the secretary to the senior pastor. She moved to Polk County from Greenville in 2013.

Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth C. Spurr of Marston Mills, Mass., Lynn Chalmers (Matthew Pohsweg) of Columbus, N.C., and Shari C. Gordon (Michael) of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Nathaniel Spurr (Casey), Sara Cushing, Carl Engelman (Britta), Anna Engelman, and Kelly Gordon; five great-grandchildren, Carter Spurr, Tenley Spurr, Leo Cushing, Lane Engelman, and Kason Phillips. Sara is also survived by a dear friend, Nita Taylor. Sara was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 23, 2017, in McFarland Funeral Chapel with Rev. Toni Pate and Mr. Steve Hardin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral chapel.
