Polk approves resolution for emergency agencies during jail evacuation

Editor’s Note: Following is a resolution the Polk County Board of Commissioners approved during its June 5 meeting in appreciation for emergency agencies’ work during a Polk County Jail evacuation on May 16 after a container of Paraquat Dichloride spilled there. Approximately 40 people, including 17 inmates, were evacuated.

WHEREAS, on May 16, 2017, a chemical spill caused the Polk County Jail and Sheriff’s office to be evacuated; and

WHEREAS, this chemical was a hazardous material and immediate action by Emergency Management to assess the situation and contain the exposure to 150 feet of the physical building; and

WHEREAS, the prompt and efficient work of all emergency agencies involved minimized the inconvenience of Polk County citizens, and ensured the safety of surrounding. properties and the hazardous material was professionally cleaned up and the Sheriff’s office and jail was back to full functionality in less than 24 hours; and 

WHEREAS, the collaboration of all emergency agencies ensured no service offered by the sheriff’s office was hindered and no citizen was at risk while the situation was being mitigated.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Polk County Board of Commissioners do hereby express their gratitude and appreciation for the services and dedication provided to the citizens of Polk County by all agencies involved.
