Arts grant helps bring creative storytelling artists to Polk County

Polk County Schools received a North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Grant through Tryon Fine Arts Center to bring Susana and Timmy Abell’s culturally rich, curriculum-based performances and hands-on workshops to all four elementary schools.

This experience introduced elementary students to seven different instruments that are part of our folk culture and to the fascinating art forms of songwriting and puppetry. Timmy and Susana Abell’s performances were lively, interactive and fully engaging for elementary school students across Polk County.

“The concert and workshop, ‘So Many Ways to Tell a Story,’ performed by Susana and Timmy Abell, was one of the most impressive, engaging and student-centered performances I have ever seen,” said Tryon Elementary School Principal Todd Murphy. “The level of professionalism and creativity they brought to Tryon Elementary was beyond impressive.”

Susana and Timmy Abell, Silver Trout Arts, are recognized as vetted professional teaching artists on the rosters of the N.C. Arts Council, the S.C. Arts Commission, The Kentucky Center for the Arts and CAPS in northern Virginia.
