Thompson to coach Region Eight State Games softball squad

Polk County head softball coach Jamie Thompson will lead the Region Eight squad during the 2017 Powerade State Games in June.

Thompson has been selected to coach the Region Eight team, which will be comprised of players from the following counties: Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Transylvania, Macon, Clay, Cherokee, Graham, Swain, Jackson, Haywood, Buncombe, McDowell, Mitchell, Yancey and Madison.

The State Games tournament will be held June 20-21 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Cardyn Allen Park in Greensboro. Teams will play three games in pool play before advancing to the medal round to determine gold, silver and bronze winners.

Thompson said he is still in the process of selecting the final roster for the team and has a tryout session slated for Saturday at 10 a.m. Polk County. The team is open to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Rising Wolverine seniors Maranda Gosnell and Haley Fowler are expected to be part of the team, Thompson said.

Polk County assistant coach Jamie Hrobak will be part of the Region Eight staff, and Thompson said he expects well-known coach J.D. Hinson to also join.
