Organizations plan ceremonies, remembrances and ask for volunteers
An act of love and sacrifice for one’s country is honored with remembrance each year on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day. Please join your neighbors and us at this year’s upcoming events.
Thursday, May 25 at 9:30 a.m. volunteers will be placing approximately 70 flags on veterans’ burial sites at the Tryon City Cemetery. We are needing volunteers to help set out the flags.
Thursday, May 25 at 10:30 a.m. the Polk County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard will be presenting a Memorial Day ceremony at the Senior Center, located at 75 Carmel Lane, Columbus.
Saturday, May 27 starting at 9 a.m. the VFW Post 9116 will be setting out approximately 400 flags on veterans’ burial sites. We need as many volunteers as possible. Contact Bevin Corbin at 828-802-1060 for more information.
Memorial Day, May 29 at 11 a.m., VFW Post 9116 will be having a Memorial Day ceremony at the Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, which will include the new Veteran Service Officer for Polk County, Gina Cashion. She will be speaking about an Honor Flight that is coming up for WWII, Vietnam and Korea veterans. The ceremony will include a 21-gun salute by the Polk County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard and the playing of TAPS. Later that afternoon a similar ceremony will be presented at the Saluda Veterans Park at 3:30 p.m. This is a great day to honor veterans of our country that have fought for the freedom of all.
Please plan on attending and celebrating our veterans and this country!
