Truck driver dies in crash on Polk/Henderson County line

SALUDA – A truck driver died in a crash on I-26 near Saluda at the Polk/Henderson County line Monday morning after he ran off the road and went between the bridges and crashed onto Macedonia Road below.

Westbound I-26 was expected to be closed until 2 p.m. Monday while crews continued to clean up the scene.

The wreck occurred near mile marker 56 with the truck taking out a section of the guardrail.

The man had not been identified as of press time as the N.C. Highway Patrol was still notifying family members.

The exact time of the crash was not known, but troopers estimated from residents who heard the crash that it occurred between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Monday.

The tractor-trailer was not hauling any cargo at the time of the wreck.

A crew came in to clean up oil and diesel fuel that spilled as well as removing the truck cab and trailer from the road.
