Lake Norman Charter stymies Polk bats in playoff victory

Lake Norman Charter held Polk County to three hits Wednesday in handing the Wolverines a 7-0 loss in the opening round of the state 2A baseball playoffs in Charlotte.

The Knights’ Grayson Hickert and Alex Lonergan teamed on the three-hitter, striking out eight as LNC (15-7) ended Polk County’s season. The Wolverines finish with a 9-12 record.

LNC pushed across runs in the first and third innings, then added two more in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage. The Knights then put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth inning.

Polk County had its best chance to score in the fourth inning. Evan Rimer opened the inning with a double, then moved to third before Tyler Harris and Nick Capozzi drew two-out walks to load the bases. But Rimer was tagged out at home trying to score to end the inning.

Bailey Livesay and Brett Phipps had the other base hits for the Wolverines in the game.
