Polk knocks off West Davidson in softball playoff opener

Polk County is coming home for the second round of the state 2A softball playoffs.

The Wolverines pushed across four runs in the final two innings Tuesday to take a 7-5 win over West Davidson in the opening round of the state playoffs in Lexington.

Shortly after the win, the news got even better for Polk County. South Stokes, the 26th overall seed in the West bracket, upset West Lincoln 6-5 in eight innings. That means Polk County, the 20th overall seed, will host the Sauras in the second round on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Polk County (12-6) opened a 3-0 lead Tuesday, only to see West Davidson (14-9) score four runs in the fourth to grab a 4-3 edge.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Ashley Scruggs singled, followed by a two-run Maranda Gosnell homer to give Polk a 5-4 advantage. Autumn Owen was then hit by a pitch and stole second before Ashley Ponder’s double drove in Owen for a 6-4 Polk lead.

The Wolverines added a run in the top of the seventh as Owen drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a Ponder single.

West Davidson’s Jenna Burkhart belted a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, but Scruggs recorded a strikeout and two infield grounders to end the game.

Polk struck quickly in the first inning as Haley Fowler walked to open the game, stole second and scored on Owen’s two-out triple. Ponder then singled to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

The Wolverines upped the lead to 3-0 in the third as Fowler singled and again stole second, moved to third on Scruggs’ single and scored on a Gosnell grounder.

Ponder finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and Gosnell was 1-for-3 with three RBI to lead Polk. Owen finished 1-for-1 with an RBIm, Scruggs was 2-for-4 and Fowler was 1-for-3.
