Polk tops Hendersonville to complete sweep of season series

Polk County built a 5-0 lead Tuesday and held on to hand Hendersonville a 5-2 defeat in Western Highlands Conference baseball action in Hendersonville.

With the win, the Wolverines (8-11, 6-5) completed a season sweep of the Bearcats (4-17, 3-9).

Polk County starter Avery Edwards allowed four hits in six innings to earn the win, striking out three and giving up two unearned runs in also beating Hendersonville for the second time this season. Zach Foy pitched a perfect seventh inning to seal the win.

Polk County took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Bailey Livesay singled to open the game and scored on Holden Owens’ one-out double.

The Wolverines manufactured a run with two outs in the third as Evan Rimer singled, stole second and scored on a Hendersonville error on the play.

The Wolverines loaded the bases in the fourth on a Foy walk, Clark Phipps single and Grayson Jones single. Foy scored on a wild pitch, with Phipps and Jones advancing a base. Another error on Elijah Sutton’s bunt allowed Phipps and Jones to score to make it 5-0.

Owens finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Polk County, which also got hits from Livesay, Rimer, Phipps and Jones.

Polk County will conclude its regular season schedule on Wednesday, hosting Owen at 6 p.m. The Wolverines will honor their senior class before the game.
