The Thirteenth Annual Kirby Cup Soccer Camp is planned for Tuesday, June 20 through Saturday, June 24 at Harmon Field in Tryon. This grant-funded, free event for boys and girls in grades 3-8 (ages 8-13) has been applied for from the Kirby Harmon Field Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation.  Applications will be available April 28 at the town halls in Tryon, Columbus and Saluda as well as at Polk County Middle School and Polk Recreation soccer games. Submission deadline is May 19. The mission of the camp is to teach fundamental soccer skills and create a global awareness by exploring other countries’ heritages. Players are divided into four teams representing countries from different continents. This year, defending champion Jamaica will take on teams from Europe, Africa and South America. Each day, players will learn about the country and then train in their style of play. The camp ends with a round robin tournament and picnic on Saturday. Enrollment is limited to 80 players on a first come-first serve basis. (photo submitted by George Alley)
