Polk County High School athletic director Rex Wells has been chosen as North Carolina’s nominee for the 2017 National Federation of State High School Associations Citations award, the honor announced earlier this month at the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association State Conference in Wilmington.

NFHS Citations are awarded to individuals whose contributions have impacted high school activity programs through their association with one of the following groups of professionals: state associations and NFHS staff, athletic directors, coaches, officials, music adjudicators and directors and speech, debate and theatre directors.

Prior to coming out of retirement in November to join Polk County’s staff, Wells enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career as a coach and athletic director in Western North Carolina and Georgia, his service so notable that in 2014 the North Carolina High School Athletic Association named him one of the top 100 athletic administrators in the state in the first 100 years of its existence. He retired in 2015 after serving as Asheville High School’s athletic director for 12 years.

One of 50 NFHS Citations nominees across the nation, Wells will represent North Carolina as its nominee for the distinguished award from the NFHS and National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. Eight winners will be selected from across the country and recognized in December at the NIAAA National Conference in Phoenix, Ariz.
