Phelmas “Buster” Carswell

Phelmas “Buster” Carswell of Mill Spring, N.C., died Monday, April 24, 2017 in Smith Phayer Hospice House in Landrum, S.C.

Born in Pea Ridge community of Polk County, North Carolina, Buster was the son of the late James Esper and Minnie Fowler Carswell. He attended Mill Spring High School and lived in Pea Ridge all his life. He worked for Cason builders, Hatch Mill, Thompson Contractors, and ran a small hauling service company. Buster’s hobbies include bird watching and anything NASCAR, especially driver Joey Lagona (Ford). Buster valiantly battled cancer for the past nine years.

He is preceded in death by his siblings, Boyce, Leo, Buren, Catherine, and Mabel.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ann Stewart Carswell, whom he married June 28, 1958. Also surviving is a son, Scott James Carswell (Sunni) of Dobbinsville, N.C.; a daughter, Cindy Carswell Viehman (Peter) of Tryon, N.C.; two sisters, Bobbie Jean Griffie (Jerry) of Columbus, N.C. and Vivian Carswell Blackmon of Lake Norman, N.C.; three granddaughters, Emery Ann Viehman, Haley Marie Viehman, and Ferrin Nicole Jennings.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in Pea Ridge Baptist Church, Mill Spring, N.C., with Rev. John Edwards and Rev. Joshua Lathan officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, 2017 in McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, N.C.

Burial will be in Pea Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
