Lawrence E. Swabb, Jr., 94, died Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Tryon Estates. He was the son of Cora and Lawrence E. Swabb, Sr. of Dayton, Ohio. He was married for 73 years to his wife, Gertrude who survives him. They moved from Short Hills, N.J. to Tryon Estates in 1997.
Lawrence was a veteran of WWII, where he served as a First Lieutenant. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with Ch.E., MS and PhD degrees in chemical engineering and physical chemistry. In a 31-year career with Exxon Research & Engineering Co., he held technical and management positions. Lawrence received a number of honors, including election to the National Academy of Engineering in 1977, cited for leadership in petroleum and synthetic fuels, petroleum research, and process development. He served on a number of government and university advisory committees. Lawrence was a member of Tryon Presbyterian Church.
Lawrence is survived by sons Edward Swabb, PhD, MD (wife, Akiko) and Richard, MD (wife, Genie), and six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A daughter, Eileen (husband, Steven Albert), predeceased Lawrence in 1997.
Memorials may be made to the Tryon Presbyterian Church. A private service was held at the Tryon Presbyterian Memorial Garden on Sunday. McFarland Funeral Chapel is handling all arrangements.
