Madison took advantage of Polk County miscues on Tuesday to rally past the Wolverines for a 6-4 win in Western Highlands Conference play in Marshall.

The Patriots snapped the Wolverines’ three-game winning streak by scoring four runs in the third and fourth innings without the benefit of a hit. Polk County (5-7, 4-3) managed just one baserunner in the final three innings and were unable to rally.

Trailing 2-0 entering the third inning, the Wolverines scored four runs to take the lead. Zach Johnson walked and Bailey Livesay reached on a bunt single to open the inning. The two then advanced a base before scoring on Evan Rimer’s single to center to tie the game at 2.

After Holden Owens’ single to center, Tyler Harris singled to drive home Rimer. Zach Foy’s base hit later in the inning drove in Owens for a 4-2 Polk lead.

But two walks, a dropped third strike and an outfield error helped Madison scored three runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead. The Patriots (5-7, 5-1) then scored one more in the fourth on two errors and a sacrifice fly for their 6-4 edge.

Harris took the loss, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and two walks in four innings. He allowed two earned runs. Foy pitched the final two innings, striking out one and allowing one hit.

Owens finished 2-for-4 to lead Polk County, with Rimer 1-for-3 with two RBI. Livesay, Harris and Foy had the remaining hits as Madison’s Luke Robinson pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing six hits, to earn the win.

Polk County stays on the road on Friday, traveling to face conference co-leader Mountain Heritage.
