Seeing Polk County on the field for the first time in 10 days alone gave head softball coach Jamie Thompson reason to smile on Monday.

Seeing the Wolverines play well and win just made the day even better.

Polk County took an early lead and controlled play throughout en route to an 8-1 victory over Mountain Heritage in a Western Highlands Conference battle at Polk. The Polk County junior varsity also emerged victorious Monday, taking an 8-6 win.

Autumn Owen’s two-run homer in the first inning set the tone as the Wolverines (2-2, 1-1) pounded out 10 hits. Ashley Ponder had a 4-for-4 day and scored three times to pace the Polk County attack.

“We hit the ball, and we hit the ball with runners in scoring position, which we haven’t done this year,” Thompson said. “All in all, it was a good day.”

Owen’s two-out homer, a Ponder double and Ashley Scruggs single gave Polk County a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Wolverines added two runs in the third on a Scruggs single that allowed Owen and Ponder to score.

Ponder’s leadoff double in the fifth sparked a three-run rally, and the Wolverines added another run in the sixth.

Scruggs scattered six hits and struck out three to earn the win. She also finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, with Morgan Stott also going 2-for-4 and Owen and Haley Fowler adding base hits.

Polk County traveled to Avery yesterday for another WHC matchup.
