Polk Central fifth graders use real-world application to learn scaling

Students in Julia Tackett’s fifth grade class at Polk Central Elementary have been working for the past week on using multiplication as a form of scaling.

Students had to be able to explain why multiplication does not always result in a larger product when using fractions. To end their lessons on scaling, students had to re-scale a Rice Krispies recipe that originally served 12 people to serve only nine people.

After students figured out the new amount of ingredients, they had the opportunity to synergize and make the recipe.
