Pisgah built a 6-3 lead after two innings Monday, then held off a determined Polk County squad to take a 12-9 victory in a non-conference baseball matchup in Canton.

Tied at 1 after the first inning, Polk County (0-3) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second with a two-out rally as Zane Johnson walked and then scored on Chris Phipps’ double. An error on Evan Rimer’s at-bat allowed Phipps to score for the 3-1 lead.

Pisgah (3-0) re-took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the second, but the Wolverines responded with runs in the third and fourth innings. After singling to open the third, Zach Foy eventually scored on a passed ball to make it 6-4, then Evan Rimer singled to open the fourth and later scored on Holden Owens’ grounder to make it 6-5.

But the Bears pulled away with two runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth for a 12-5 lead. Polk County made it very interesting late, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh and loading the bases with two outs before Pisgah got a ground ball to end the game.

Owens finished 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead Polk County’s 10-hit attack, with Cedric Pickett adding a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI.

Owens took the loss for the Wolverines, allowing five hits and striking out four in four innings of work. Foy pitched the final two innings for Polk.

The Wolverines return home today hosting Asheville Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m.
