Polk golfers show improvement in opener

Polk County’s boys golf team opened its season Thursday with a 161-188 loss to Spartanburg Christian Academy that nonetheless had head coach Pat McCool optimistic about the season ahead.
The Wolverines fired a nine-hole score of 188 in the match at Tryon Country Club. That’s 28 strokes better than the team’s season opener a year ago.
Polk County’s Dillon Overholt fired a 43 to lead the Wolverines, with Josh Chupp carding a 47, Gabe O’Brien a 48 and freshman Hunter Lynch a 50 for Polk’s top four individuals.
Also competing were Blake Rackley (56), Troy Lieberman (56), Nick Wilson (57) and Jaylon Bontrager (60).
Nick Willis, a Wofford signee and defending South Carolina Independent Schools Association 2A state champion, shot a 35 to lead SCA.
