Tryon Painters and Sculptors opening March 4

Published 10:00 pm Thursday, March 2, 2017

Tryon Painters and Sculptors will open a vibrant showcase of talent on Saturday, March 4. On display will be a collection of works by guest artists Arden Cone and Betty Deppner, along with member artists Doris Clark, Lee Barker, Vicki Van Vynckt and Taylor Robenalt. A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with light refreshments available.

Artist and writer Arden Cone’s roots go deep into her native home of South Carolina, and Charleston, and her work reflects the decadence of Charleston’s plantation aristocracy. Her paintings are exhibited professionally and she writes for the blog, One South Contemporary, which she launched in June, and she is in the process of completing her MFA in painting from Boston University.

Betty Deppner is an intuitive abstract artist whose paintings are unplanned and reveal their meaning to her only after several layers of paint have been applied. She likes to mix random objects to create whimsical, one-of-a-kind assemblages. She believes artistic ability lies in seeing below the surface and into the imagination, and sees art as a medium for interpreting life and glimpsing its mysteries.

Member artists include Lee Barker, whose work reflects her combination of past experience as a research scientist and her love of nature as she creates award-winning pieces that are on display both in private and public venues across the country, and painter Doris Clark, who started her art career after retiring from a teaching career, and whose work is displayed in private homes and collections both at home and abroad. Additional member art includes the sculpture of Taylor Robenalt, who has a fascination with the way her mediums can be shaped at her will to express emotion and dreams, with a focus on flora and fauna, along with the spiritual and inspired sunrises and sunsets masterfully painted in oil by accomplished artist and oil painting teacher, Vicki Van Vynckt.
