Basketball roundup: Season ends for Wolverine squads in WHC tourney

Avery opened a 41-6 halftime lead and went on to hand Polk County a 73-35 loss in the opening round of the Western Highlands Conference girls basketball tournament in Newland.

The Vikings, now 19-6, will face the winner of Friday’s Hendersonville-Madison game in Tuesday’s semifinals. Mountain Heritage will meet Owen in the other semifinal.

Autumn Owen and Mariah Overholt each scored 13 points for the Wolverines (2-22). Karli Wood had three points, with Haley Fowler and Bella Marino each scoring two and Anna McFadden and Ava Marino each scoring one.

POLK BOYS FALL: In Burnsville, Mountain Heritage built a 14-point lead and went on to hand Polk County an 85-60 loss in the opening round of the WHC boys tournament.

Mountain Heritage improved to 14-8 with the win and will visit Owen in a semifinal game on Tuesday. Hendersonville will face Avery in the other boys semifinal, also at Owen.

The Wolverines end their season at 4-20.
