Columbus man dies in Greenville County wreck

A Columbus man died on Sunday afternoon in a wreck in Greenville County, S.C., according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Curtis Russel Kempton, 57, of Columbus died from his injuries at the scene of the crash, which was along U.S. 276 about 10 miles north of Travelers Rest, S.C.

Troopers said Kempton was the driver of a 2002 Ford truck and he drove off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned.

Kempton’s wife was a passenger and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to reports.

According to the coroner’s report, Kempton was having trouble breathing before going off the road. Kempton was pinned inside the vehicle and was extricated before being pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of Kempton’s death has not yet been determined and the wreck is still under investigation. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, Jan. 30.

Both Kempton and his wife were wearing seatbelts, according to reports.
