Wolverine track teams swing back in action at Polar Bear meet

Polk County’s indoor track team shook off the rust Friday from a long layoff, hosting the Polar Bear #2 meet in G.M. Tennant Stadium.

Competing for the first time in more than a month, the Wolverine girls enjoyed a solid day, placing second in the 17-team field gathered for the event. The Polk County boys placed 11th in the 18-team field.

Brevard’s girls squad captured top honors in the girls meet, posting 84 points to Polk County’s 70. Franklin earned first place in the boys meet with 86.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Murphy with 62 points.

Polk County’s Troy Lieberman had one of the meet’s most dominant performances, soaring 13-6 to set a personal record and win the pole vault by two feet over Madison’s Josh Yontz.

In the girls meet, Polk County’s Reece Alley won the long jump with a mark of 15-3 1/2, qualifying for the state 2A/1A indoor championships with the leap. Alley also placed second in the triple jump.

Izzy Jackson won the 500-meter dash in 1:24.41, a personal record, while Polk County had a 2-3-5 finish in the shot put, that being Micheala Nelon, Reagan Waddell and Kimberly Williams.

Lauren Ketwitz placed third in the pole vault and India Godlock took third in the 1600-meter run for the Wolverines.

Polk County will host the WNC Polar Bear meet on Wednesday, its final regular-season meet of the year. Head coach Alan Peoples said as many as 30 teams could field entries in the meet.
