Avery boys best Polk, extend conference winning streak

Avery ran its Western Highlands Conference winning streak to 45 games on Tuesday, topping Polk County 76-51 in boys basketball action in Newland.

The Vikings, who haven’t lost a conference game since the 2012-2013 season, improved to 7-4 overall, 3-0 in conference play with the win.

After a close first quarter, Avery took command of the game in the second period, outscoring Polk 22-6 en route to a 44-22 halftime lead.

Jaylon Bontrager led Polk County (2-10, 0-4) with 12 points. Jaymes Wingo added nine, with Dillon Overholt, Rustin Muse and Clark Phipps each adding seven.

Polk County returns home for a non-conference game on Friday, hosting rival Landrum.
