Wolverines to head to Surry Central for football playoff opener

Polk County will open its final 2A state football playoffs with a road trip to Surry Central, according to pairings released Saturday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
The Wolverines (5-6) received the seventh seed in the West subregion and will journey to Dobson on Friday to face the Golden Eagles (10-1), the second seed in the Midwest subregion.
The two schools have met once before, Polk County defeating Surry Central 35-33 in the opening round of the 2003 1A state playoffs.
Surry Central will enter with a six-game winning streak, its lone loss a 42-7 rout at Mount Airy in mid-September. The Golden Eagles won the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference for the first time in several seasons.
