John Allen Albree

John Allen Albree, LTC, US Army (Ret) died on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the age of 88 at Tryon Estates.

LTC Albree was born September 20, 1928 in Boston, Mass., the son of the late Grace Mara and George Norman Albree. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis H. Albree of Tryon Estates, Columbus, N.C.

He served four years in the United States Marine Corps before attending college. He graduated from Norwich University, Northfield, Vt. in June 1951. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned a 2nd LT, Armor in the regular Army.

LTC Albree served in many varied assignments to include commands at platoon, company and battalion level. His last assignment before retirement was on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Joint Services Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. He was qualified as a US Army parachutist and was one of the first three Americans to graduate from the Belgian Army Airborne School in 1958.

Upon retiring from military service, he was a real estate agent/broker for 10 years in Northern Virginia. He was a charter recipient of the Certified Residential Specialist designation.

LTC Albree retired to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1984, where he belonged to Duck United Methodist Church and Duck Woods Country Club. In 2003, he moved to Tryon Estates, Columbus, N.C., where he belonged to Tryon United Methodist Church and Tryon Country Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of DeWitt Clinton Lodge, Northfield, Vt. for over 60 years. John scored his first hole-in-one on May 3, 1986 at Duck Woods Country Club. He then scored five more holes-in-one in a 30-month period at Tryon Country Club.

In addition to his beloved wife of over 65 years, he is also survived by his son, John Allen Albree II of Tryon, N.C.; daughter, Michelle Beth Newhall of Leesburg, Va.; granddaughter, Dana Russell of Asheville, N.C. and a sister, Ann Markel of Midlothian, Va.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on November 12, 2016 at Tryon United Methodist Church with inurnment in the Memorial Garden to follow.
