Peake Street paving now complete

TRYON– Downtown Tryon is sprucing up with its streetscape project, including new sidewalks and a new Morris plaza, but work will not begin again until after the town’s Beer Fest, scheduled for this Saturday, Nov. 5. The latest project to be completed was the repaving of Peake Street, from East Howard to Shepherd Street.

Tryon Town Council met Oct. 18 and approved extending the contract with Trace & Company until Nov. 30.

Tryon Community Development Director Paula Kempton updated council, saying she asked them to change their schedule because the town started running into events, including a recent bike race, the Halloween Stroll and the Beer Festival.

Kempton said Trace finalized Peake Street and that will put them back on the Pacolet Street project after Nov. 5.

Council approved extending the contract until Nov. 30. The contract was previously extended from Sept. 1 until Nov. 1.

The next projects will be to finish the paving on the Oak/Pacolet Street intersection downtown and to pave part of East Howard Street.

The streetscape project began this summer with redoing existing sidewalks and adding a sidewalk down Oak Street as well as improvements to the intersection including a bump out. The sidewalks have been redone from Missildine’s to the Tryon Theatre and also from Buck’s Pizza to Oak Street.

Improvements have also been made at Morris the Horse and the intersection of Trade and Pacolet Streets.

The entire project is estimated at $200,000. The paving of East Howard, beginning adjacent to Stott’s Ford will also include infrastructure work underneath the road that commissioners decided to do in-house. The additional cost for the infrastructure work has been estimated at an additional $10,000-$12,000.
