► Polk County Trails nature walk Oct. 26

Polk County Trails invites the public to join a nature walk at the Saluda Nature Park on Wednesday, Oct. 26. The hike will be up the Summit Trail with views of the foliage and surrounding area. Contact trails@polknc.org if interested or for more information.

► Polk recreation basketball registration begins

Polk County Recreation basketball registration has begun. Forms are available on the recreation website at polknc.org as well as the bulletin board in front of Stearns Gym. Forms can be returned to Stearns Gym by placing in the drop box on the front door, by mailing to P.O. Box 308, Columbus, NC 28722 or by emailing zhigh@polknc.org.

► Saluda tree trimming almost complete

Saluda is completing its tree trimming ordinance enforcement this week with just a couple of streets remaining as of Monday, Oct. 10. The Saluda Board of Commissioners met Oct. 10 and heard from city manager Jon Cannon about the tree trimming. Cannon said 108 properties were out of compliance. Letters will be sent to those property owners next week.

► Saluda considering allowing family to plant tree and bench in cemetery

The Saluda Board of Commissioners met Oct. 10 and heard from Betsy Wren Smith, who asked permission to replace a dead dogwood tree within her family’s six plots with another tree as well as a bench. The majority of commissioners approved Smith’s request and directed her to work with the city’s tree committee in order to plant the appropriate tree.
