Late goal lifts Polk County past Avery in WHC matchup

Luis Hernandez scored in the 74th minute Monday to lift Polk County to a 1-0 victory in a Western Highlands Conference soccer match in Newland. With an assist from Isaias Akers, Hernandez lifted the Wolverines to their third straight win. Pictured is Polk County defender John Dougherty.  Polk County is now 5-5-1 overall, 3-0 in conference play. Wilson Edwards had three saves and Jonah Wyatt had six saves for Polk, which outshot Avery 14-11. The Polk County junior varsity played to a 0-0 tie at Crest in a match shortened by inclement weather. Both teams were off the remainder of this week and will travel to Owen on Monday.
