Congregational Church president, Bill Boone, rang his bell in the church’s fellowship hall on Sunday, Aug. 21. Because there have been many changes in the church recently, all promptly quieted down wondering, “Now what?!” karenkilloughsecondwindAfter reading a paragraph or two from a plaque that no one else could see, Bill Boone announced that the church was sponsoring Karen Killough for Second Wind Hall of Fame! All cheered.

Karen, a native of Tryon, has served the church doing just about everything: member-at-large, on the boards of deacons, parish life, trustees, and currently as vice president of church council. For years, Karen has been the librarian for and an alto in the church choir and a handbell ringer.

She is active in the Foothills Music Club, currently serving as its secretary, served on the boards of Tryon Downtown Development Community and Harmon Field, and sang in the Community Chorus.  She taught middle and high school before and after having her children, Eric and Julia Lindsay, and for five years was a realtor for ReMax.

She is a Chapel Hill graduate, and received her master’s degree from Converse.  She is an advocate of animal rescue and fostering. Karen loves to sew, sing, play piano duets with friends, and, most of all, being a grandmother of three.  When asked what she would like to be remembered for most, Karen says, “Serving the community and my grandkids.”

“The Second Wind Hall of Fame is a 38-year old Thermal Belt organization whose mission is to recognize and to honor the many active retired community volunteers who do so much to improve the quality of life for all our citizens. Karen Killough is an excellent example of the more than 200 current Second Wind members who, in retirement, catch a “second wind” in service to their community.

At the annual luncheon meeting this month, Karen will be celebrated for her contributions, along with the other new inductees into the Second Wind Hall of Fame,” according to Larry Poe, president, SWHF.  The Congregational Church of Tryon is very proud to be Karen’s sponsor.
