Sherry Owensby Askarinam passed away on September 8, 2016. Born in Tryon, N.C., Sherry was a graduate of Polk Central High School and attended Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas and Howard University in Washington, D.C. Sherry lived for some time in Washington, D.C. and then moved back to Columbus, N.C.

Sherry is survived by her mother, Ruby Garrett Owensby; her two daughters, Elizabeth Makris (Nicolas) and Rachel Askarinam Wagner (Jacob); her three grandchildren, Leila, Lucille, and Matthew and her ex-husband, Iraj. Sherry was a lifelong learner, avid reader, artist, historian, and loved antiques and travel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sherry’s memory to the Polk County Public Library. Plans will be made for services at a later date.
