Upstairs Artspace has announced the dates for its 8th annual Art Trek: Foothills Open Studios event, which takes arts and craft lovers on a glorious fall tour of the western Carolina foothills and some of the studios of the region’s most talented and creative artists and crafts people.

This year the tour will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24 and 25, with an opening reception at the Upstairs Artspace on Friday, Sept. 23.  The tour and reception are free events and promise to add even more color to the beginning of the fall season in the foothills.

The preview party from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 23, offers an overview of the work of all participating artists, with the opportunity to see what each artist creates so you can plan a personalized weekend tour using the official Art Trek map. In addition, downstairs in the gallery the bidding starts on a silent auction of works by artists on the tour. The exhibit will end with a closing reception, Friday, Oct.14.

Art Trek is all about showcasing the immense talent of the artists living and working in the foothills. The art represented in the tour and exhibit covers painting, sculpture, woodturning and wood carving, fiber art, pottery, furniture and photography. Art “trekkers” will have the opportunity to meet the artists, talk about their art and, in some cases, even watch the artist at work.

Local businesses that help sponsor the tour will also be part of the weekend events, offering Art Trek discounts and special meals. Look for the Art Trek Sponsor signs in the windows for additional reasons to join the Trek.

The Upstairs Artspace is headquarters for the tour and is open all weekend. People can pick up a brochure with map and driving directions, and a light breakfast and bottled water will be available, Saturday morning from 9–11 a.m. Brochures are also at area businesses and the artists’ studios. For additional information, call the Upstairs at 828-859-2828 or visit upstairsartspace.org.

The Upstairs Artspace is a non-profit gallery whose 38-year history has been devoted to developing an understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and craft forms through exhibits, programs and educational activities that enrich the cultural life of the region. Its free programs are made possible through the support of the Polk County Community Foundation, the North Carolina Council of the Arts, and the generous support of its members. The gallery is located at  49 South Trade Street.
