Polk County senior India Godlock ran to a third-place finish Saturday to lead the Wolverine contingent at the Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival in Hendersonville.
Almost 1,200 runners competed in the Carnival, held at Jackson Park. So hot and humid was the day that winning times for some of the day’s races were a minute slower than in last year’s event.
Godlock posted a time of 21:54 to place third in the Girls 5K Invitational. Morgan Summey of Greer Middle posted a time of 19:54 to win the race while Murphy’s Cameron Rice placed second in 20:50.
The Wolverines took just four girls runners to the event and thus didn’t record a team score. Also competing for Polk were:
Drew Bailey. 31:44; Abigail Amato, 33:36; Madison Poe 36:36
The Polk County boys, who graduated four of their top seven runners from last season, placed 25th in the 33-team Boys 5K Invitationl field but were also missing several runners expected to contribute this season. The team also had a runner attacked by yellow jackets during the race.
Led by Caleb Potter, who finished in 20:22, Wolverines competing on Saturday included:
Chris Lawrence, 21:31; Kiyon Staley, 22:11; Evan Dadson, 22:43; Emmett Zacharias, 23:14; Luke Collins, 24:51; Tyler Lawrence, 27:02; Bryan Dadson, 27:11; Jeremiah Petoia, 29:30
Both teams will return to action on Saturday, competing at Montreat College in Black Mountain.
