TRYON – Tryon could have a new sculpture soon at downtown’s St. Luke’s Plaza.

The Tryon Board of Commissioners met Tuesday, Aug. 16 and approved the concept of a sculpture of two birds on a railroad track piece be placed at the town’s water fountain to the plaza.

Commissioner Crys Armbrust proposed the idea, saying he’s been in discussion for the past six months to incorporate in some way a sculpture at the “yet to be named” fountain at St. Luke’s Plaza. Armbrust said he’s met with the potential sculptor, Dale Weiler.

“The sculpture itself would cost the town nothing,” Armbrust said.

He said Weiler has agreed to donate 50 percent of the costs and Jackie Lane, widow of Bob Lane has agreed to cover the remaining 50 percent.

Armbrust passed around a drawing of the proposed sculpture, which is called “Tails on Rails.” The design (see photo) is of two birds on a railroad track which would be placed at the fountain.

The town would be in charge of creating a pedestal for the sculpture, according to Armbrust, but he suggested fundraising.

Commissioner Roy Miller asked if the town would be responsible for any maintenance or repair of the sculpture.

Town attorney Bailey Nager said the sculpture would be part of the town’s property and would be covered by insurance if any repairs need to be made.
