Billy Groves “Bill” Lee

Billy Groves “Bill” Lee of Saluda, NC passed away on August 11, 2016 at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville, NC.

Born to the late Carl and Inez Lowe Lee, he was raised in Gaston County, NC and was a graduate of Mount Holly High School.  At a young age he earned his Eagle Scout Rank and then went on to serve his country in the United States Navy.  After his tour in the Korean War he returned to the United States and worked for Brach’s Candy Company until his retirement.  Bill was also a Mason, Elks and Exchange Club member.

Bill enjoyed spending his free time bowling, golfing and giving back to others through philanthropy and volunteerism. Bill was active in many First United Methodist Church (Isle of Palms, SC) youth and mission projects and had special involvement with the Epworth Children’s Home renovation projects over the years.  Bill moved to Saluda, NC in 2010 and was a very active member of the Saluda United Methodist Church, the church youth and community projects and a volunteer at the Historic Saluda Train Depot.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Hazel “Tootie” Lee in 2007, a brother Don Lee (2012), and a step-nephew Greg Phillips (2003).

Surviving is a sister-in-law Libby Lee, and two nieces: Donna Froneberger and Janet Johns.  Bill is also survived by his “adopted” children who adored him: Chris Gillam (Holly), and grandchildren Catherine and Alyssa; Edie Berry (David), and grandchildren Chloe and Colleen; step-son Donald Fischrupp and step-grandchild Mackenzie Fischrupp; and a special friend, Ethel Prange.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Saluda United Methodist Church in Saluda, NC with Rev. Rob Parsons officiating.
