If you’ve ever thought about getting involved as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, now is your chance to find out more about the organization. An information session will be held on Thurs., Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Polk County Public Library in Columbus.

Designed to provide an overview of the BBBS mentoring programs that serve children in our schools and communities, the session will be in the Community Room at the library. Following a brief presentation, staff will be on hand to answer questions from potential volunteers and parent/guardians who may be interested in enrolling their children in one of two available programs.

In the traditional community-based program, children ages six to 14 are paired with screened and trained adult mentors. Trusted friendships develop as they enjoy outings together in the community based on mutual interests.

Elementary school children are matched with mentors through the school-based program, for students who need a little extra attention in school. These matches meet for one hour per week at school and focus on academic improvement and social development.
