Historic Downtown Tryon plans Pokemon “Massive Lure Drop” Aug. 6

The popularity of the game “Pokemon Go” has been attracting people to downtown Tryon for the last couple weeks. In coordination with local businesses and non-profits, Tryon Tourism is planning a “Massive Lure Drop” on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is expected to attract hundreds of players.

Due to the sheer number of Pokestops and PokeGyms that are already within walking distance of each other, “Pokemon Go” players have been spotted walking the streets of Tryon trying to “catch ‘em all.” Historic Tryon has approximately 17 PokeStops and four PokeGyms throughout downtown alone.

The impetus for the event started at the Tryon Coffeehouse Co-op when one of the team members started experimenting with placing “lures” on the fountain right outside the shop. There was definitely a surge of foot traffic at the plaza. Different businesses and the volunteers at the Tryon Coffeehouse started chatting and pitched the event to the Tourism board.

“’Pokemon Go’ is the biggest US mobile game of the year. It’s viral and it’s fun. All over the country, the game is bringing families and individuals to cities and small towns as they walk, explore and play this popular game. What better town to explore than Historic Tryon? This unique event will feature our wonderful, walkable and friendly town by creating this larger-scaled Pokemon event. The game is not just for kids – we have noticed all ages playing the game,” stated Michalia Cosmus-Cowles, board chair for Tryon Tourism Board.

Tryon-based businesses, restaurants and non-profits are joining in on the fun to make this a celebratory, family-friendly event.  A band will play on the plaza; Pokemon beach balls and balloons will decorate the streets. An information station about “Pokemon Go” and the Town of Tryon, as well as real-life maps and safety tips will also be available.

The first lure drop will start at approximately 10 a.m. Each “lure” typically lasts 30 minutes but Tryon is going to “light up” the “Pokemon Go” map from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Current players are going to be able to “level up” at an enhanced rate. New players are going to be able to launch their game and get tips from experienced players.
