Columbus Town Council decided last week to conduct a safety class.

Council made the decision after councilwoman Margaret Metcalf asked Columbus Police Chief Chris Beddingfield if it was possible considering everything that’s going on in the world, particularly the mass shooting in Orlando, Fla.

Metcalf said many may be wondering what to do if they find themselves in a similar situation.

“What should we do?” Metcalf asked. “Play dead.”

Beddingfield said he would be happy to conduct a class on how to deal with an active shooter. He said he has discussions with the public at businesses that often turn into those type of discussions.

Councilman Josh Denton suggested the town conduct a class at Stearns Gym or ICC-Polk.

Beddingfield said he will work on a location and time and keep council posted.

Metcalf said people who live by themselves or don’t drive could really benefit from a safety class such as the town is discussing.

“Even if it will just build a little bit of confidence to make them feel better,” Metcalf said.

Beddingfield said he will plan a safety class in early fall of this year.
