Margaret Sue Hollifield Carpenter, 83, of Tryon, N.C. passed away on May 13, 2016 at Golden LivingCenters in Hendersonville, N.C.

Sue was born on November 20, 1932, in Bostic, N.C., the daughter of James Clyde and Buena Gettys Hollifield. She was a resident of Tryon since 1967. She was a longtime member of Tryon United Methodist Church and was retired from First Union Bank, after having worked at Bostic Bank and Northwestern Bank before their acquisition by First Union.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Elbert Carpenter of Tryon; her son James and wife Tracey of Swannanoa, N.C.; her son Charles and wife Pam of Cherryville, N.C.; her son Richard of Tryon, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Courtney of Raleigh, Bryan of Swannanoa, and Cannon and Erich of Cherryville, N.C. In addition, she is survived by two brothers, Howard Hollifield of Ellenboro, N.C., and Earl Hollifield of Bostic, N.C.; one sister, Mary Dodgen of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Tryon United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Tryon United Methodist Church with Rev. Phillip Hurst officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 16, 2016, from 6 – 8 p.m.

Burial will follow the service at Sunshine United Methodist Church in Bostic, N.C.
