Tryon Fine Arts Center’s Spring Sunset Concert Series in the Peterson Amphitheater continues Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. with classical guitarist Jhon Akers’ program, Carl Sandburg and the Spanish Guitar.  The performance, sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council, includes Akers’ interpretations of the pieces Sandburg most loved, his writings about the guitar—even a hilarious “Subway Conversation” that echoes “Who’s on First” by those NYC philosophers Abbot and Costello—as well as a creative narrative about his life-long love of the instrument.

An avid classical guitarist and associate professor at Wofford College, Jhon Akers has performed at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Notre Dame University, Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C., and the Free Library of Philadelphia. He also has been a featured performer at the Carl Sandburg Home during the annual poetry celebration.

The Sunset Amphitheater Series is generously sponsored by the Plume Family Foundation. Admission is by donation at the door. In case of inclement weather, the event will move into the auditorium.
