An accident took place on the roundabouts over I-26 in Columbus Tuesday involving an SUV and a tractor trailer.

According to Columbus Police Chief Chris Beddingfield, the accident occurred Tuesday morning at approximately 11:10 when a blue Lexus SUV failed to yield to the tractor trailer as it was entering the traffic circle, thereby causing the collision.

The trailer, who was already in the traffic circle, suffered damage to the fuel tank and approximately 20 to 25 gallons of fuel were spilled, according to Columbus Fire Department Captain Bobby Arledge.

“Because of the fuel leak, this accident took approximately an hour and 20 minutes to clear,” Beddingfield explained. “That’s a significant amount of time for an accident. Our first priority is to continue the flow of traffic afterwards.”

A citation was issued to the driver of the Lexus for unsafe movement, according to Beddingfield. There were no injuries reported and Jackson’s Towing assisted in fixing the truck after the accident.
