Residents of White Oak Village in Tryon had a big party on Oct. 14 to celebrate Orval Bloom’s 100th birthday. There were two cakes. Everyone in attendance enjoyed eating one, and the other cake came to life when Martha Frederick, near Orval’s age, jumped out of the cake wearing a beautiful blue party dress. Everyone burst into singing “Happy Birthday.”  A Tryon resident for many years, Orval has been active with the Kiwanis Club of Tryon and with the Foothills Humane Society.
