The Green Creek Fire Department is having a benefit spaghetti supper on Saturday, July 18 in order to raise money for new uniforms and new equipment.

The supper will be from 4-8 p.m. at the fire department, located at 8645 Hwy. 9 South. Donations will be accepted for the meal.

Firefighters say they are trying to raise money to help purchase uniforms. Most Green Creek firefighters have dress uniforms but the department has had several new members join recently who need uniforms.

The department is also looking to purchase stand-by uniforms for firefighters to be used at functions such as the Green Creek Heritage Festival and other community events. The uniforms will be more practical for firefighters when they are responding to fires and medical emergencies, according to the department.

Green Creek fire is also trying to update its capabilities for rescue. The department wants to purchase equipment to better serve residents of Green Creek and Polk County.

Firefighters are currently taking technical rescuer training for certification. The technical rescue certification classes include rope rescue, vehicle extrication as well as other rescue functions.

Green Creek Fire Department’s Jeremy Gregg said the department realizes they are not just a fire department anymore.

“We have had to change with the times and the needs of the community,” Gregg said. “As many of you are aware, we just completed a vigorous amount of training and practice to lower our insurance rating. We hope to have word back from the North Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office soon of our new rating class.”

The Green Creek Fire Department provides fire protection, vehicle extrication, medical first responder and back up emergency ambulance transport.

The department is run with all volunteer staff and does not charge patients for transports to the hospital.

“We would like to thank the community for their support of the Green Creek Volunteer Fire Department,” said Gregg. “We hope you will continue to support us as we grow our capabilities as Green Creek Fire & Rescue.”
