Sybil Cashwell Strider

Published 5:38 pm Monday, June 15, 2015

Sybil C. Strider, 90, of Tryon, N.C., earned her heavenly reward on Thursday, June 11, 2015. She passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord.

Sybil was born in Durham, N.C. She was the youngest daughter of Harry Franklin Cashwell and Beulah Hill Cashwell. She gave her life to Christ at the age of nine. Her faith was galvanized when, at the age of 17, she survived a collision between a taxi cab, in which she and several of her Sunday school friends were traveling, and a moving train. Sybil suffered a severe concussion and spent a month in the hospital recuperating.

After graduating from Durham High School a year early, Sybil went to work at Camp Butner in Butner, N.C. The camp had been built as a training and staging area prior to deployment of troops to the Western Front during WWII.

In 1947, she met Carroll Davis Strider, a WWII veteran studying engineering at NC State College. They married September 20, 1947. Thus began Sybil’s career as an Army officer’s wife. After 24 year of service (hers), she and Carroll retired to an apple farm in Edneyville, N.C.

In 1985, they relocated to Tryon, N.C. to be close to family. Sybil loved to travel, and she and Carroll visited China, Russia, Greece, Israel, Canada, New Zealand, and Indonesia as well as many European countries.

She was always active in her church, teaching Sunday School, leading prayer groups, and taking leadership positions in the women’s fellowship groups. Sybil had a beautiful singing voice and sang in church choirs, the Carolines (a women’s singing group in Tryon), and the Community Chorus. At one point God gave Sybil the words and music to five hymns of praise. She would never take credit for creating the hymns – giving the praise, honor, and glory to the Lord.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda S. Haynes (Andy), Tryon, N.C. and one son, Harry E. Strider, Tryon, N.C.; four grandchildren, Bevin S. Holmberg (Aaron), Falmouth, Maine, Robert A. Haynes, Jr., E. Norriton, Pa., Morgan S. Haynes (Renee), Durham, N.C., and Arden C. Strider, Spartanburg, S.C.; and one great-grandson, Strider James Holmberg, Falmouth, Maine. She was predeceased by a son, Carroll Davis Strider, Jr., May 6, 2000.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 20, 2015 in Tryon United Methodist Church with Rev. Phillip Hurst officiating.
