The chase began in Lake Lure Sunday evening and continued to Mill Spring in Polk County, where the motorcycle rider crashed and died.

The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Glenn Kelley, of Spartanburg, S.C.

The N.C. Highway Patrol reported Kelley was speeding southbound on Hwy. 9 in Rutherford County shortly before 5:45 p.m. Sunday. A state trooper attempted a traffic stop, but Kelley fled and continued along Hwy. 9 into Polk County, according to the highway patrol.

As Kelley approached the intersection of Hwy. 9 and Silver Creek Road in Mill Spring, troopers said he traveled onto the right shoulder of Hwy. 9 into a gravel parking area and when he attempted to cross onto Silver Creek Road he struck the paved portion and lost control. Kelley’s motorcycle began sliding on its side and struck a traffic island, ejecting him from the bike. Kelley was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelley was not wearing a helmet, according to the highway patrol.
