Contractors are on schedule to have a water line complete in the Sunny View community by the end of the summer.
The Polk County Board of Commissioners met May 4 and heard a construction update from county manager Marche Pittman.
Pittman said Steppe Construction, the contractor, indicates that progress is going well so far and they have four more stream crossings left to complete. The project is 70 percent complete, and the contractor is still on schedule to complete the line by the time the new school year begins at the end of August.
The water line is an extension from the Mill Spring crossroads to connect Sunny View Elementary School and the Sunny View Fire and Rescue Department with public water. The water line extension runs down Hwy. 9 South to Big Level Road from Hwy. 108 in Mill Spring.
The water will come from the county’s agreement with the Broad River Water Authority, which is administered through the Inman-Campobello Water District (ICWD).
Construction of the water line began in December 2014.
Polk County Commissioners approved a construction contract last year with Steppe Construction for $1,567,340 with the county appropriating $1.6 million from the county’s fund balance to pay for the extension.
The completion of the water line will mean that all Polk County fire departments and schools are on public water instead of wells.
