Isothermal Community College Foundation, Polk Campus, is pleased to announce receipt of a very generous gift from the estate of Mr. D. William “Bill” Bennett. Additional scholarship funds for Polk County students will be available from Isothermal Community College Polk Campus thanks to this gift.
Although very little is known about Mr. Bennett or his wife, Maggie, we know they moved to Tryon from their “hobby farm” in Kenosha, Wisc. The Bennetts enjoyed traveling, with a particular interest in remote areas and unspoiled ecosystems. They were committed to the protection of endangered wildlife and the preservation of wilderness parts of the world threatened by exploitation and development. Mr. Bennett was also an author and the editor of several historical publications.
Walter Dalton, president of ICC, commented, “This gift is very much appreciated and greatly needed and is an investment in our future. Isothermal Community College is an affordable, accessible and excellent opportunity, and it is because of benefactors like Mr. Bennett that we can better serve our students and the community.”
Joe Crowder, ICC Polk Foundation President, stated, “Mr. Bennett’s largesse will have a major impact on our community for many years to come. His thoughtfulness and generosity will directly affect our physical plant as well as our curricula. I hope others will consider Mr. Bennett’s example when planning their estates and help us maintain diverse educational opportunities in our community.”
