After a complete renovation that began four years ago, a new Saluda City Hall and Police Department is almost complete.

The project began in 2011 with a new roof on the historic building, located downtown at 6 East Main St., Saluda.

Saluda City Council met Feb. 9 and heard from city administrator Erny Williams, who said the painting had been finished on Feb. 9 and expectations were for the project to be complete at the end of February.

Williams said contractors were installing floors, still had to finish the ceiling tiles and a few punch list items before the project would be complete. The schedule was to be finished at the end of February, or last week, but a few items are still being completed this week, such as cleaning.

The renovation includes switching the police department and city hall offices, the installation of an elevator and a complete renovation of both upstairs and downstairs.

The city has done the renovation in stages over the last four years beginning with the new roof in 2011 and other exterior construction, including exterior brick, new doors and windows and exterior metal, all completed in 2012.

Saluda financed a portion of the project with a loan from Macon Bank over the next 20 years for $488,750.

The city has approved total costs of $587,621, according to the city finance office.

Saluda City Council approved a contract with Dunlap Construction, out of Hendersonville, in December 2013 for $390,876 to complete the interior restoration of the building.

Saluda City Hall was originally constructed in the 1920s with the last restoration completed in 1986. The building is part of Saluda’s Main St. Historic District, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places
