The S.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck happened on Hwy. 11 at Dill Road at 7:29 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21.

It appears the car ran off the road and into the woods, according to reports.

Landrum High School Principal Jason McCraw said the school’s thoughts and prayers go out to Skyler’s family during this difficult time.

“Our students and faculty have lost a wonderful young man and our hearts are very heavy today,” said McCraw. “Please keep our school family in your thoughts and prayers.”

A release from the school district said District One counselors, administrators, local clergy and school-based mental health professionals are on hand at Landrum High School to provide assistance to students and staff.

Powell was the son of Tammy and Jonathan Taylor.

Skyler played football for Landrum High School.

He was recently named to the Region I AA All-Region Football Team. Powell led the Cardinals in the 2014 season with 60 tackles on defense and played offense as well.
